Laboratorio de Beats del Mediterráneo is an open collective for electronic improvisation founded in 2016 by Juan Antonio Moreno (Ombracle). It brings together musicians, DJs, and producers to explore collective real-time creation using synthesizers and other electronic devices. The collective focuses on improvisation as the core of its activity, aiming to create a space where every voice matters and the sonic result is greater than the sum of its parts.
The Labo is based on the principles of active listening, mutual respect, and collective construction. It moves away from hierarchies and egos, prioritizing flow, communication, and experimentation.
Their jams and performances are characterized by various improvisation dynamics, with formats like “Round Robin” (where musicians enter and exit in rotation) and “Free-for-All” (where all musicians participate simultaneously). Another distinctive feature is the absence of leaders or soloists, as the improvisation is completely collective, with no one directing or commanding. Finally, great importance is given to silence and space, valuing silence as part of the music and aiming to create a sonic fabric where every contribution makes sense.
With nearly a decade of experience, the Mediterranean Beats Laboratory has established itself as a reference space for electronic improvisation in the region, helping to foster creativity and experimentation, providing a platform for musicians and producers who want to explore new sonic paths, build community by connecting people with similar musical interests and generating a sense of belonging, and spreading electronic music culture by bringing electronic improvisation to a wider audience.
