Katatonic Silentio

Mariachiara Troianiello, the Italian sound artist behind the moniker Katatonic Silentio, works at the intersection of electronic music, performing arts and sound studies. Both in her practice as a live performer and in her work as an independent researcher, she seeks to connect different fields and approaches to sonic production.

Active as a DJ for nearly twenty years, her sets take on multiple forms: from pure abstraction —combining musique concrète, world music, spoken word, ambient or dub— to more club-oriented rhythms, moving across techno, leftfield and drum’n’bass.

Katatonic Silentio approaches sound as a critical tool and maintains a genuine interest in exploring sonic possibilities and practices from both artistic and sociological perspectives. As a composer, she investigates the interaction between sound, space, movement and the body through her work in theatre and dance. As a researcher, her current work delves into the more ancient and mythological dimensions of sound, exploring its origins and tracing its evolution from primitive cultures to the contemporary world.

She has performed at numerous international festivals including Berlin Atonal, Draaimolen, Transart, MUTEK, Jazz Is Dead, Paral·lel Festival, Nextones, Meakusma, La Nature, Mostra, Fuori Festival and Festival dei Due Mondi, among others.

Her work has also been presented at institutions such as Triennale di Milano, Studio di Fonologia RAI di Milano, Asian Civilisations Museum and Museum Angewandte Kunst, among others.

She has released music on labels such as Delsin, Ilian Tape, Midnight Shift, Fleur Sauvage and Die Orakel, among others.
